STONEHAM, Mass. —

Too often, history is presented as a straight line, especially when it comes to successful revolutionary moments in history. Think of the common perception of the Civil Rights movement; so often it is portrayed as a lone figure marching in a straight line to victory when, in reality, it was a coalition of competing voices and branches, with victories, defeats, missteps, and contradictions. This impulse to purge doubt and impose order on chaotic change sanctifies our view of these historical figures and movements, and obscures the messy work needed to make change. Continue reading

CHELSEA, Mass. — Naked lightbulbs hang from scaffolding over a raw black box stage. Their pull-chains gently sway from the motion of patrons choosing their seats. The naked stage leaves lots of room for the performance of Peggy Shippen is…, an enigmatic new play that’s running about ten minutes late.

(Boston, MA) Holy crap, go see Spamilton. Seriously, I mean it this time: go see Spamilton. Parody musicals aren’t for everyone but almost everyone loved Hamilton and Spamilton takes all of the great parts of Hamilton and makes them funny on purpose. Spamilton is a good laugh – even for the people who hate Hamilton.

(Boston, MA) American history is black history, is slave history. It is a history that demonstrates the deepest stoicism and power of humanity. Beaten and chained, stripped of everything, Black American slaves formed communities tighter than blood, turned lifetimes of suffering into exquisite song, and used song to rise above, revolt against injustice, and redeem all humanity. Nat Turner’s Rebellion was a point of inflection in our nation’s story, which swung the course of history toward freedom and salvation. A grand opera is needed to deliver this epic.
