2 hours with one intermission

BOSTON — A Taste of Ireland presents a pepperminty-fresh holiday Irish dance concert, A Celtic Christmas, now at the Boston Center for the Arts. It’s a perfect treat for the avid dancer enthusiast and hobbyist alike. Tickets are available for this touring production’s Boston stop through Dec. 14.

Direct from its Off-Broadway season, A Taste of Ireland brings A Celtic Christmas to Boston for the first time. It features Irish dance competition champions and stars from Lord of the Dance and Riverdance. Frankly, the stamina, flexibility and athleticism of these dancers is remarkable. These performers dance for two hours with only the briefest of pauses for costume changes with a live band that meets them halfway. While the show’s loose plot relies heavily on hetero-normative gender roles to push its narrative, the dancers’ impressive skill is a heartbeat keeping the audience focused on the stage. Even if Irish dance isn’t your idea of fun, one can’t deny how impressive their artistic labor is.   Continue reading

BOSTON — Thanksgiving has passed. The Black Friday sales are over. Unread Giving Tuesday emails have been ceremoniously deleted. So you know what that means… Deck your halls and gird your loins, folx, it’s time for the first seasonal siege of the War on Christmas!

Just kidding. Mostly.

The 2023 December holidays are near and that means preparation for Hannukah, Advent, Yule, Christmas, the new moon, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s. While other theatre companies are rehearsing their annual A Christmas Carol for the family set, BenDeLaCreme and Jinkx Monsoon are cinching their girdles for this year’s edition of The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show for queer adults (NETG recommended 17+) and their allies. (Boston, MA) Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is the secular, heteronormative Christmas musical I didn’t know I needed to see the season. I was in a grumpy mood when last night. I was feeling so grinchy that I could have abandoned my theatre plans to don a furry, green unitard and guide an empty sleigh drawn by a single, overworked pup into the Boston streets. My mood was foul when the curtain rose. But, by the time the curtain went down, I was chipper with the holiday spirit. The dancing and singing in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is so infectiously charming that I had no choice but be swept into a better mood. Continue reading

(Somerville) Every year for the holiday season, the Babes in Boinkland take the good denizens of the Boston burlesque scene on a journey of fantastical fornication, sensational shtuping, and beautiful buggering.  This year, of course, is no exception.  If you appreciate the human form, are a fan of high ballet, and/or have a sense of humor about sexuality, why are you even questioning if you should see this show?  Go buy a ticket, and come, come, come to Somerville for a Christmas treat with more dick than Dickens.
