SOMERVILLE, Mass. — At some point, someone studying 20th century comedy will make a case that the sitcom Seinfeld was a meanspirited rip-off of the effervescent short stories and book series about the unflappable and omniscient valet Reginald Jeeves.

Jeeves first appeared in publication at the tail end of WWI and his service to the daft, irresponsible, and well-off Bertie Wooster lasted until 1975, with every one of the pair’s misadventures written by British humorist P.G. Wodehouse. Continue reading →

(Somerville) Halloween can be a bit bizarre for those of us in our twenty-somethings.  That weird age bracket when you’re not yet ready to give up the idea that this time of year should be about more than the hum-drum and ordinary; that perhaps there was something to the sugar-coated memories of your childhood walks around the neighborhood in the brisk autumn air wrapped in some crude approximation of a Jedi robe that came from a Party City bag; that perhaps, if you look hard enough, there’s something out there to do that’s not sit at a bar and commiserate with the other “adults” who are still trying hopelessly to deny the fact that they’re too old for free candy from strangers (no matter how good their home-made Hogwarts uniform looks). (Cambridge) Lo-Fi Lowdown was an homage to the Noir style and the art that it inspires. The first half of the performance was a jumping jazz concert lead by Bremner Duthie and his combo. The second half belonged to Tanya O’Debra and her one-woman radio play Radio Star. Together these two halves complied a fresh evening of cabaret and Foley fun. Continue reading →
