BOSTON — The official summary for Stereophonic says it mines “the agony and the ecstasy of creation as it zooms in on a music studio in 1976.” An up-and-coming rock band recording a new album finds itself on the cusp of superstardom. Internal and external pressures could “spark their breakup… or their breakthrough.” Written by David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin, and featuring original music by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, Stereophonic shows its audience the creativity, drugs, and drama of writing and recording a stellar, best-selling folk rock album, a la Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
Stereophonic is just one of many works inspired by the saga of Fleetwood Mac and Rumours. Daisy Jones & the Six, the best-selling novel and the Amazon T.V. show, and an episode of Agatha All Along are others. Stereophonic earned 13 Tony nominations and won five awards in 2024. Its cast album rocks and stands on its own as great entertainment (whether you enjoy Fleetwood Mac or not). The touring production is a solid theatre that represents well the artistic creative process, massive egos, and the heartbreak of losing a family through interpersonal drama.
Stereophonic does a great job of presenting an artist’s reality through the lens of dramatic rendering. The story has a lot of stopping and starting, patiently waiting on tech, thinking, arguing, stopping, and starting again. Occasionally, there’s a tantrum, but mostly the characters want to make art… Until the last act. Artists in the audience will recognize the long days and longer nights associated with our lifestyle. Normies might not and that’s okay. There’s a lot more waiting in real life than Hollywood captures.
If Fleetwood Mac fanfiction is your jam, this production is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it from our seats in the orchestra. Daniel Aukin’s direction includes lots of small, intimate moments from the cast that you need to see up close to fully appreciate such as the casts’ sighs of acceptance during stressed moments and knowing looks shared between castmates. These moments are subtle but influential in the course of the play. Missing them diminishes the experience. If that’s cool for you, buy the ticket that fits your budget.
Is it worth selling your data for eternity to ATG Tickets for $57.33 – $262.08? That’s entirely up to you. This production is Broadway-quality (Denver Milord as Peter is the spitting image of a trimmer, sleeker Will Ferrell in SNL’s “More Cowbell” sketch). Any music played live is better than even the best recording.
The NPR Stereophonic Tiny Desk Concert (2024) gives you a taste of the experience.
