The Golden Dragon Acrobats hail from Cangzhou, Hebei province, in the People’s Republic of China and have toured the United States continuously since 1978. Its members are athletes, actors, and artists who have studied and trained for their craft since early childhood. The group averages 200 performances each year and has toured through all 50 states and in over 65 countries across the world. In 2005, their Broadway debut and seven-week run at the New Victory Theater earned two prestigious New York Drama Desk Awards nominations (for Best Choreography and Most Unique Theatrical Experience). They have just completed their second five-week run at Broadway’s New Victory Theater with Cirque Zíva running from December 1, 2014 to January 4, 2015. This makes them the only acrobatic troupe from China to be chosen twice for this prestigious venue.

The group’s founder, producer, and artistic director, Danny Chang, is one of the world’s leading promoters of Chinese acrobatics. He began his training at the age of eight with his family’s acrobatic school in Taipei, and joined its touring wing, the Golden Dragon Acrobats, at age 10. He is the recipient of many awards, including the prestigious Medal for International Faith and Goodwill by the Republic of China’s Coordination Council for North American Affairs.

Danny’s father, Lien Chi Chang, officially established the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats in 1967 with his family whose members included Danny Chang, his sister, and other students. From 1967 to 1984, Lien Chi led the company to numerous performances in different nations. Danny Chang often traveled with his father’s Golden Dragon Acrobats and was later chosen by the National Acrobats Troupe of Republic of China to lead the various world tours. After more than 17 years of apprenticeship under his father and several world tours, Danny was ready to step up as the President of the Golden Dragon Acrobats when Lien Chi Chang accepted the head coaching job at the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts. As a young entrepreneur, Danny showed tremendous passion toward the acrobatic arts. His first goal was to reorganize the company from a small group to a world renowned production company. He chose the United States of America as his starting point. With Bill Fegan’s assistance, the Golden Dragon Acrobats debuted in 1985.

Today, the Golden Dragon Acrobats have been recognized as the preeminent Chinese acrobatic company in the United States. As the director and the producer, Danny Chang has built a solid reputation based on his talents as both an acrobatic performer and artistic director. Every year, the choreographer and his wife, Angela Chang, attend different acrobatic competitions to constantly select the most elite performers to join the Golden Dragon Acrobats.
